What is del.icio.us?
Del.icio.us is a free service that allows you to bookmark websites directly to the web, allowing your bookmarks to travel with you between computers, independent of the computer and/or browser. All you need is a browser and an internet connection to use del.icio.us. With del.icio.us you can keep links to your favorite sites, share favorites with friends, and discover new sites. Since every bookmark on del.icio.us is someone's favorite, they have already found the great site for you.

Can I see an example?
Sure! Here is my site. You can also access it directly by typing the URL addess into your internet browser: http://del.icio.us/heathermcc. Here is Amy Boehman’s site, a teammate of mine: http://del.icio.us/aboehman

What can I use del.icio.us for?
Saving bookmarks online and sharing them with others can be a powerful tool that saves you time. Think about what you can do:

  1. Research: Are you researching a topic for school or work? Keep track of all of your materials that you find online.
  2. Curriculum Sites: Bookmark the sites you use in your daily teaching or professional career. Tag them by subject area so that you can find them easily by category. Now all of your favorite teaching sites can be shared with teammates and peers by viewing your del.icio.us page.
  3. Collaboration: Friends, teachers, administrators, or peers can share an account or special tag to organize bookmarks that are useful to everyone.

What is a tag anyway?
A tag is a keyword that you assign to the website to help you remember the site for a later date. Tags can describe: subject areas, grade levels, categories, ideas, and so on. Separate tags by a space to enter them into del.icio.us. Keep in mind the tags you use within del.icio.us have to be ONE word keywords. If you want to tag a site with a keyword that has more than one word, use the underscore symbol instead of a space. Therefore, if you want to tag a site "social studies", be sure to write it like this: "social_studies". You can add more than one tag to a site. For example, you may tag the site http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/ as "science", "social_studies", and "interactive". When you click on one of these tags to see the sites listed on this topic, the "National Geographic Kids" website will appear.  Always add at least one tag to every website you bookmark. Tags will help you find your sites easily as your list of favorites grow. The power of having your websites on del.icio.us is the ability to use tags to help you organize your sites, so make use of them!
